Week 2 Ex. B

Consctructive Criticism

https://www.adsoftheworld.com/media/print/wwf_insomnia

 Description

This is an insomina-related WWF advertisment desgined by Miami Ad School. The ad strictly sticks to  2 basic colours black and white. The ad is kept minamilistic as besides the WWF logo, it includes a sentence of text and several silhouette of Vaquitas. The content of the ad is expressed using text in the top centre of the ad - "Counting Vaquita will make you stay awake at night".

Analysis

The typed message contradicts our prior knowledge of how counting things, in large quantities, can actually help put us to sleep. This contradiction draws attention to the actual meaning of the ad that is how there are too little Vaquita to count such that it cannot help put us to sleep, suggesting how the species are endangered.

The centralised format of the ad creates a lot of empty white spaces which gives this sparse scarcity effect, further driving the message of the endangeered Vaquitas.

The lack of colours, other than black and white, serves to drive this broody mood of the ad and emphasises the seriousness of  how endangered Vaquitas are.

The WWF logo also helps to direct viewers to the idea that this ad has more relevancy to endangered species than to insomnia, helping the audience better connect with the intended message.

Interpretation

The main goal of the ad design was to highlight the seriousness of the issue and encourage viewers to take action. There could also be guilt-tripping involved in the sense of "how could you sleep at night if these animals are endangered", tying in with the words of the ad "make you stay awake at night".

Judgment

I think the ad has done very well to create and use the mood of sympathy to drive the message of taking action to help the endangered Vaquitas.

However, the design is limited in effectiveness as it only serves to deliver the information of endangered Vaquitas but not how we can help. So while it empowers the audience to take action, there is no guidance that informs them of how to.

Week 8 Ex. G

Spiraling This was done in AI. I wanted to do a pattern of increased complexity with a traperzium of sorts. I duplicated it and rotated it to the right at an angle until the rotation would cause one of the sides to stick out of the box (box 1 to 3). I then grouped it and then duplicated the entire pattern and made is smaller than the original to overlap it (box 4 to 5). In the last box (box 6), I made it more complex by enlarging the grouped trapeziums such that it now slightly sticks out of the box, giving an illusion that the lines still continue infinitely outside of the box.

Assignment 2 - Story Time!

Contract Killer When I was reading the brief, I wanted to do a crazy comedic scene. However, I did a second (final) iteration of the assignment as the storyline I submitted for the critique was too chaotic. The final iteration can be found after the Critique Session. First Iteration - Storyboard I decided to do the storyboarding on paper because I have better freedom of expression with a physical pen than a digital one. Below are scalations of the drawn storyboards. Read from left to right, row by row. Pikachu have white ears while Pichu have black ears. 1 - Ditto Baby (Used) Storyboard 1 - Ditto Baby Two Pikachus are just chilling and one of them has a baby in its PokeBall pouch (kind of like a kangaroo). The Pichu comes to join the chill party and wants to see the baby. However, the baby is a Ditto Pichu resulting in a bunch of surprise Pikachu faces. It ends with the Ditto fleeing the scene. Background Context: A Ditto is a pokemon with the iconic :) face that can shapeshift into an...

Assignment 1 - Abstraction

Abstraction of Le Rice Cooker  Stage 1 I was pacing around the house deciding on what would be a good object to abstract from, not too manydetails nor already too simplified. I entered the kitchen and found our cute little rice cooker... Perfect! My aim is to abstract the rice cooker with the intention of showing that it is a small portable pink rice cooker. For Stage 1, I decided that it would be a good idea to trace out the rice cooker and capture all the details like the words, the plug and even the rice scoop. This is the most realistic illustration of the rice cooker. To do this, I duplicated the photo (press and hold ALT and drag it across) and decreased its opacity so that I can use the Pen Tool to trace over it. I did a rough outline and then went into the details. Given that there were a lot of curved points, I followed Kai's advice on not dotting to create the curve but instead anchor it at another point and continue to press down on the left mouse button to create the cu...
